Telehealth continues to benefit patients 16 October 2020 Telehealth has become a major player in the public health system and the benefits to patients and consumers has been none more evident than in the case of Claire Murray. Claire, who lives in Karratha is a mother of three and has type 1 diabetes. Claire has been a Telehealth patient for over five years since she was originally referred to King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH) for pre-conception care in the lead up to her first pregnancy. As Karratha Hospital is unable to provide the obstetric or neonatal care that would be needed of a woman with type 1 diabetes Claire would need to be in Perth for the delivery of her baby. Telehealth meant that Claire was able to stay at home in Karratha and her care was shared between Karratha Hospital and KEMH with Telehealth consults between appointments to assist with her diabetes control and to coordinate appointments. Sobira was recognised by her colleagues for her commitment to NMHS values by displaying a consistently high standard of nursing care which is truly patient centered. Speech Pathology Week - Communicating with Confidence 21 August 2020 It is Speech Pathology Week (23-29 August) and the 2020 theme is Communicating with Confidence! There are 1.2 million Australians with communication disability. Speech pathologists like Brittany Vogels, A/Senior Speech Pathologist at SCGH, work with these Australians to provide them with the confidence to communicate. “In Australia today, communication disability remains largely invisible. Unseen and out-of-sight,” Brittany said. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the challenges faced by Australians with communication disability. In a recent article in the Guardian titled ‘We give patient’s their voices back,’ (external site) the vital and often overlooked and misunderstood role of the speech pathologist was recognised. Celebrating our staff! 13 August 2020 Congratulations to NMHS Development Senior Project Officer Thomas Cianflone on being named NMHS Corporate Employee of the Quarter! Thomas has always shown outstanding dedication to delivering high quality capital works but this was even more evident during the past quarter when he was required to deliver projects relating directly to the COVID-19 response. Thomas maintained a calm and customer-focused attitude despite significant time pressures and increased workload including the expedited delivery of works in D Block as well as the new ED Fast-Track area. Thomas also has a large portfolio of other projects in the planning and delivery phases, for which he has demonstrated excellent customer service under time pressure. A GEM of an evening! 07 August 2020 On Thursday evening the cream of the North Metropolitan Health Service (NMHS) crop headed to Harry Perkins at QEII for the inaugural GEM Awards celebration. The Going the Extra Mile (GEM) Awards provide an opportunity to celebrate and reward high achieving staff who exemplify the values of Care, Respect, Innovation, Teamwork and Integrity in their service. NMHS Board Chair Jim McGinty was MC for the evening and an amazing 52 finalists in ten categories were recognised. The GEM Awards is set to become an annual event and provides a valuable opportunity to showcase the great work being done throughout the NMHS service and celebrate the many exceptional staff that we work alongside.
