North Metropolitan Health Service (NMHS) provides a variety of cadetships, programs and scholarships.

Aboriginal Cadetship Program 

The Aboriginal Cadetship Program (external site) offers Aboriginal university students the opportunity to earn an income and gain valuable work experience while completing an undergraduate degree.

Cadets undertake 12 weeks (60 days) work experience during each calendar year, comprising one day per week each semester or block attendance during semester breaks (usually December to February, and July), or as negotiated.

Medical Placements

Medical internships and Resident Medical Officer placements with Western Australian public health service providers are facilitated through a centralised annual recruitment process coordinated by the Postgraduate Medical Council of WA (PMCWA). For more information visit these websites:

International Medical Graduates

Doctors whose primary medical qualifications were obtained in a country other than Australia or New Zealand are known in Australia as international medical graduates (IMGs) (external site). IMGs play a vital role in helping the Western Australian public health system meet its service delivery responsibilities.

Nursing and Midwifery Scholarships 

These scholarships (external site) are for applicants who are studying to gain an initial qualification as an enrolled nurse, registered nurse or midwife.

  • Enrolled nurse to registered nurse conversion course – Scholarships of up to $3,000 per year are available to qualified enrolled nurses undertaking a Bachelor of Science (Nursing) degree, or equivalent, to convert their qualification to registered nursing.
  • Studying to become a registered nurse or midwife – Scholarships of up to $3,000 per year are available to students who have successfully completed semesters 1 and 2 of a Bachelor of Science (Nursing), Bachelor of Science (Midwifery) or dual degree. Registered nurses studying midwifery can apply for a scholarship of up to $3,000 per year from commencement of their course.

Re-entry to Nursing or Midwifery Scholarship

These scholarships (external site) assist enrolled nurses, registered nurses and midwives undertaking an accredited course that leads to renewal/restoration of registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (external site). The Nursing and Midwifery Office will fund up to a maximum 50% of the course costs.

NMHS Undergraduate and Postgraduate Nursing and Midwifery Clinical Placements 

As part of our investment in our future nursing and midwifery workforce, North Metropolitan Health Service (NMHS) provides clinical placements for undergraduate and postgraduate nursing and midwifery students. Students have the opportunity to gain experience in a range of areas including medical, mental health, community, midwifery, surgical and critical care services.

Undergraduate and postgraduate nursing and midwifery clinical placements at NMHS are coordinated by nursing and/or midwifery staff across our hospital network that work in partnership with both local and interstate education providers.

NMHS is committed to leading the way for excellence in education, starting with our education staff and the nursing and midwifery students who visit our facilities. Clinical placements are monitored and continuously improved, ensuring that students undertaking placements at NMHS continue to receive high quality clinical experiences.

Who can apply for undergraduate and postgraduate nursing and midwifery clinical placements at NMHS?

Registered training organisations which hold undergraduate and postgraduate student clinical placement agreements with NMHS are permitted to request placements for their students within the health service.

Requests and queries should be directed to the NMHS undergraduate and postgraduate nursing and midwifery placement teams referred to above.

Undergraduate and postgraduate nursing and midwifery clinical placements are highly sought after by both local and interstate education providers. For this reason, NMHS is unable to offer these placements to students from other disciplines or international education institutions.

How can students apply for an undergraduate or postgraduate nursing or midwifery clinical placement at NMHS?

Direct requests from students will not be considered. If you are a nursing or midwifery student seeking a clinical placement, please discuss your clinical placement needs with your course coordinator or clinical placement team. Your education institution may be able to submit a placement request to the NMHS undergraduate and postgraduate nursing and midwifery placement teams on your behalf.

How are undergraduate and postgraduate nursing and midwifery clinical placements allocated?

Clinical placements for undergraduate and postgraduate nursing and midwifery students are allocated in the year prior to placement. NMHS is committed to providing equal opportunity of placement capacity to all Western Australian education providers, regardless of their course curriculum or enrolment capacity.

During the allocation process, NMHS follows set policies to ensure fair and equitable placement allocations. Priority is given to placements for Western Australian-based students attending Western Australian educational institutions. After all requests have been allocated, the requests from non-Western Australian education providers for their Western Australia-based students are considered. Placements are not allocated to students from other disciplines, international education institutions or international students.

Student Clinical Placement 

Students undertake a clinical placement as part of their supervised practical course work leading to a qualification required for a health-related occupation, for example:

  • Allied Health
  • Nursing and midwifery
  • Medical
  • Paramedical
  • Pharmacy.

Participating education institutions include universities, registered training organisations or TAFE colleges responsible for the delivery of education or training.
