State Forensics Mental Health Services

The North Metropolitan Health Service (NMHS) State Forensic Mental Health Service (SFMHS) provides mental health care for those within the criminal justice system or at risk of serious offending.

The statewide service provides a range of evidence informed interventions and treatments to consumers with complex and challenging behaviours, risks and presentations. The multidisciplinary services work in partnership with the WA Department of Justice and other health care providers.

The service is comprised of inpatient, community, mental health court diversion, prison in-reach and detention centre-based programs.

Admitted Services

The Frankland Centre

The Frankland Centre is a 30-bed secure forensic inpatient facility located on the Graylands Hospital campus.

The service provides assessment and care for people who are referred from the courts and prisons via hospital and custody orders under the Criminal Law (Mentally Impairment) Act 2023 (CLMI) or under the Mental Health Act 2014.

Dryandra Ward

The Dryandra Ward is a 15-bed secure forensic inpatient facility located adjacent to the Frankland Centre.

Dryandra Ward has a rehabilitation focus with consumers primarily being subject to CLMI custody orders.

Non-Admitted Services

Community Forensic Mental Health Service

The Community Forensic Mental Health Service (CFMHS) is located on the Graylands Hospital campus and provides assertive case management to people within the Perth metropolitan area who are on forensic orders, have severe and enduring mental illness and present a high risk of serious reoffending in the community.

The CFMHS also supports community mental health services outside the Perth metropolitan area by providing risk assessments and advice for consumers under forensic orders or with significant forensic risk.

Prison In-Reach Programs

The Prison In-Reach program provides two services within the WA prison system – the Prison In-Reach Consultation Liaison (CL) service and Prison In-Reach Transition team.

The Prison In-Reach CL service provides psychiatric assessment and treatment for prisoners with a mental illness.

The Prison In-Reach Transition Team is a multidisciplinary team that provides early referral, integration, continuity of care and safe transition of prisoners into community mental health services via pre-release planning and case management.

Start Court Program

The Start Court program is located at the Central Law Courts in Perth for people facing criminal charges who have a history of mental illness.

Start Court seeks to address the over representation of people with a mental illness in the criminal justice system by addressing the offending behaviour as well as the mental health and psychosocial needs. The program works in partnership with the Department of Justice and Outcare.

Child and Adolescent Services

Links Court Program

The Links Court program is located at the Perth Children’s Court to help young people between the ages of 10 and 18, who are appearing before the court and have a suspected a mental health illness.

Links Court is a partnership between the Department of Justice, State Forensic Mental Health Service (SFMHS) and Outcare.

Child and Adolescent Forensic Service

The Child and Adolescent Forensic Service (CAFS) is a statewide community forensic mental health service for children and adolescents up to age of 18 who are engaging in, or are at risk of, serious offending.

CAFS works in partnership with Centrecare and the Waalitj Foundation.

Youth Detention Specialist Neurodevelopmental and Mental Health Service

The Youth Detention Specialist Neurodevelopmental and Mental Health Service (NDMHS) is located at the Banksia Hill Detention Centre for children and adolescents in detention as well as those transitioning to the community.

The NDMHS team works in partnership with Centrecare and the Waalitj Foundation.
