Dental staff supporting victims of family and domestic violence
With 25 November marking the start of 16 Days in WA, we are highlighting some of the activities being undertaken across the organisation to help stop violence against women.
Some of our staff at Dental Health Service volunteer their time to support victims of family and domestic violence, by providing free private dental services as part of the Healing Smiles Organisation.
The Perth-based Health Smiles Organisation provides dental services to people who are unable to access treatment because of financial, physical or emotional limitations.
Suanne said she first heard about Healing Smiles at an event in 2021 and decided to volunteer.
“It is so rewarding to be able to provide services to people who couldn’t otherwise have access to them. Our patient is no longer in pain and is much more confident,” Suanne said.
“Many women are unable to afford the costs of dental treatment after suffering abuse and this impacts their self-esteem and job opportunities.
“With the support of my dental assistant and coordinator we help one patient at a time, after hours, and provide whatever treatment is required from beginning to end.
“I encourage other dentists to get involved in this worthwhile cause. If you’re interested in volunteering contact healingsmileswa@gmail.com.”
The 16 Days in WA campaign runs from 25 November through to 10 December (Human Rights Day) each year. For more information visit the website.
