  • Dr Epee
Life-saving care following recent birth 29 May 2025 A young family have praised the life-saving care provided by King Edward Memorial Hospital and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital following the recent birth of their third child. During a 20-week scan, mum Emily was diagnosed with a rare pregnancy complication known as placenta increta, where the placenta embeds too deeply into the wall of the uterus. King Edward Memorial Hospital Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Dr Mathias Epee said the rare disease can cause major problems for both the mother and the baby. "The condition affects 1 in every 500 pregnancies and is one of the most complex challenges in obstetrics today." Our Placenta Accreta Service typically treats seven to 10 women a year with the condition, however, this is starting to rise and the hospital recorded 24 cases last year. “We know that it’s a worldwide problem that is significantly linked to the increase o...

Celebrating our wonderful volunteers National Volunteer Week (external site) (17-23 May 2021) is an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation's volunteers. The 2021 theme is: Recognise. Reconnect. Reimagine. which acknowledges that it is time to: RECOGNISE, celebrate and thank volunteers for the vital role they play in making our communities stronger, especially during times of need, crisis or isolation. RECONNECT to what is important by giving our time to help others, our local community or a cause we value. REIMAGINE how we better support volunteers and the organisations they help so that they can continue to do the necessary work that they do. Thank you for your ultra-generous donation! 14 May 2021 Michael and Emmalene Head visited on the 22 April 2021 to formally announce their donation of $5,000 to the State Head Injury Unit (SHIU). Michael ran 180km and Emmalene’s employer sponsoring him per kilometre. The SHIU were very fortunate to receive 50 per cent of the funds raised (the other 50 per cent going to cancer research).
