Neurodiverse-ED creates supportive environment for Emergency Department staff

In a first for the organisation, neurodivergent staff and allies working in the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Emergency Department now have the opportunity to join Neurodiverse-ED.
The initiative was launched by ED nurses Lexi, Kelsie and Emily, as a way to provide support to neurodiverse staff in their department.
Kelsie said whilst group members share different motivating factors to get involved with the group they all share the common goal to build a community to support the growing neurodiversity population of staff (and patients) in the Emergency Department.
Group members are given the opportunity to openly share supportive advice, tips and strategies on self-regulation and managing difficult situations in the workplace, as well as strategies to improve communication.
Neurodiverse-ED also enables members to grow their social support network both within work and in the community.
Lexi said it came as no surprise when they received a high level of interest from staff after starting the group in June last year.
“The group has created a sense of inclusion for many members, and empowered staff to bring their positive attributes to our workplace and wear their quirks with pride," she said.
Clinical nurse Emily stated that embracing neurodiversity in the workplace can significantly enhance organisational success, and educating staff on how to support their neurodivergent peers is key.
NMHS is committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all and ensuring equitable access to health services, information, and employment opportunities.
Peer support group Neurokin provides neurodivergent staff across the organisation the opportunity to meet regularly and organises events to help staff support one another.
This week marks Neurodiversity Celebration Week, providing the opportunity to highlight and recognise the many skills of people who are neurodivergent.
