National Pharmacy Technician Day
October 18 is National Pharmacy Technician Day and we are celebrating the vital role they play in our service. Pharmacy technicians are integral to Australia’s hospital pharmacy workforce, they are the backbone of Pharmacy.
Hospital pharmacy technicians work collaboratively with pharmacists to ensure our patients receive their medications in a safe and timely manner.
Pharmacy technicians cover a wide variety of duties which include:
- Dispensing prescriptions to inpatients and outpatients
- Preparing aseptically compounded products such as parenteral nutrition, chemotherapy and intravenously administered preparations
- Preparing non-aseptically compounded pharmaceuticals such as creams and ointments
- Distribution of medicines to clinical areas via imprest services
- Inventory management for the wards, pharmacy stores and dispensaries
- Preparation of reimbursement claims for PBS prescriptions
- Administration and dispensing of clinical trials
While the roles and responsibilities of pharmacy technicians vary from hospital-to-hospital and state-to-state, the focus is the same: delivering precise technical services and assistance to pharmacists to collectively provide safe and efficient care to our patients.
Today, on National Pharmacy Technician Day, we thank and celebrate our Pharmacy Technicians.
