Our doctors join in ride against domestic violence
Three doctors from SCGH along with an RPH colleague took part in the 260km Ride Against Domestic Violence event this weekend, together raising over $100K towards refuges for women and children experiencing, or at risk of family and domestic violence.
Dr Con Phatouros NIISwa Head of Department, Dr Brendan McQuillan Cardiologist and Dean of UWA medical school and Dr Andrew Thompson Neuroradiologist from SCGH along with Dr Niall Henry, an emergency physician from RPH all took the physical challenge, braving the chilly mornings for the humbling event that heard personal stories along the way.
“One of the highlights was the diversity of people participating, from all walks of life, united in drawing a line in the sand against family and domestic violence,” said Con.
In 2019 63% of assaults in WA were family and domestic violence related and the ride empowered participants and community members to look for changes in order to combat this scourge.
The group stopped a number of times to speak with local members of parliament and hear about the great work being done by support services and refuges, with one poignant moment hearing a victim’s personal testimony.
“She was visibly distressed and had to pause several times,” added Con.
“It was a really powerful moment and reinforced to the group just why this was so important.”
As a physician Con has a clinical interest in the imaging and treatment of non-fatal strangulation (NFS) which can be seen in intimate partner violence (IPV). In October 2020 NFS became a legislated criminal offence. Con assisted KEMH’s Sexual Assault Resource Centre in the preparation of a soon to be released education package for WA Health and the community to raise awareness of this important entity.
