Celebrating our wonderful volunteers
National Volunteer Week (external site) (17-23 May 2021) is an annual celebration to acknowledge the generous contribution of our nation's volunteers.
The 2021 theme is: Recognise. Reconnect. Reimagine. which acknowledges that it is time to:
- RECOGNISE, celebrate and thank volunteers for the vital role they play in making our communities stronger, especially during times of need, crisis or isolation.
- RECONNECT to what is important by giving our time to help others, our local community or a cause we value.
- REIMAGINE how we better support volunteers and the organisations they help so that they can continue to do the necessary work that they do.
At NMHS we recognise the impact our volunteers over all our sites and services have on the patient journey and of course the invaluable assistance they also provide to NMHS staff.
We recognise all our volunteers but have managed to feature a few and find out what they enjoy most about being a volunteer….
Meet Ilse Smith SCGH Auxiliary President "I was asked to join the SCGH Auxiliary as a volunteer in their Kiosk by a long serving member some 10 years ago. I can honestly say it has been a most rewarding experience. Meeting a great variety of people and helping them in many small ways to negotiate the hospital environment through our shop, selling snacks, drinks and gifts to lift the spirit of patients and visitors alike." |

Meet Maureen Davies SCGH Volunteer committee member "I enjoy working in Charlies Gifts & More (previously knows as the Auxiliary shop) because I like talking and serving visitors to the hospital.I enjoy working in Charlies Gifts & More (previously knows as the Auxiliary shop) because I like talking and serving visitors to the hospital. Also it gives me a chance to catch up with staff I know from working in the hospital for 30 years prior to my retirement." |

Meet Christine Grayson SCGH Breast Cancer Clinic “I came to the Breast Cancer Clinic after volunteering elsewhere at Charlie’s and found the clinic a great place to be. The atmosphere is wonderful and the clinic is one big team helping women and men to cope with the news that they have breast cancer. During the time I serve tea and coffee I try to help people forget by chatting and sometimes managing to bring a smile or laughter to the situation.” |
||
Meet Bev Jackson-Hooper SCGH Breast Cancer Clinic “I joined Breast Centre team at the beginning of the COVID lockdown last year. I had a lovely Volunteer experience I will never forget that made the offer of a cup of tea and a chat at PMH when my son was a very sick little baby. I love to offer the same friendly smile and a cuppa to Patients when they walk into our clinic not knowing what their future holds for them.” |
