State Forensics Mental Health Services

NMHS Mental Health, Public Health and Dental Services (MHPHDS) State Forensics Mental Health Service provides mental health assessment and treatment across a range of settings for individuals with mental illness associated with high risk behaviours. People receiving forensic mental health care are typically in the criminal justice system.

Forensic High Secure inpatient unit (Acute)

The Frankland Centre is a 30 bed forensic hospital located on the Graylands Campus. The hospital provides mental health inpatient care to remand and sentenced prisoners, individuals referred on Hospital Orders by the courts for mental health assessment, and individuals found not guilty by reason of unsound mind or unfit to stand trial subject to the Criminal Law (Mentally Impaired Accused) Act 1996

Forensic rehab inpatient unit (Non-Acute)

Four open beds on the Graylands Hospital Campus are available for forensic patients subject to the Mentally Impaired Accused Review Board (MIARB) with medium to long term rehabilitative needs.

 

Community Forensic Mental Health Service (CFMHS)

The CFMHS operates from Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm. The CFMHS provides:

  • Case management for individuals living in the Perth Metropolitan area who have severe and enduring mental illness associated with a high risk of serious reoffending and are subject to certain types of legal orders.
  • A Court Liaison Service which offers mental health assessments for defendants appearing in courts across the State on request
  • A Consultation liaison service to local mental health services offering forensic risk assessment and advice on management of risk.

Child and Adolescent Forensic Service (CAFS)

CAFS provides a consultation liaison service to metropolitan and regional services offering forensic risk assessment, advice and support for children and young people (up to 18 years of age) who have mental health issues and who have a history of serious offending or who may be at risk of serious offending.

Mental Health Court (Start Court)

A dedicated, multiagency specialist mental health court located at the Central Law Courts which aids support and specialist community treatment programs for individuals facing criminal charges with a mental illness (operates Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm).

Children’s Court Program (Links)

A specialist program for younger people facing criminal charges with suspected mental health needs which provides assessment, support and referral (operates Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm).

 

Prisons

A prison in-reach program providing:

  • psychiatric clinics in Perth metropolitan prisons and three regional prisons to assist the Department of Justice, Corrections Mental Health and AOD service in providing appropriate specialist psychiatric care for prisoners with mental illness
  • prison in-reach transition team facilitating prisoner transition to community mental health and psychosocial support services on release
  • specialist psychiatric consultation-liaison in-reach providing oversight of the assessment of prisoners found to be Dangerous Sex Offenders (WA Dangerous Sexual Offenders Act 2006) for treatment of paraphilia, including treatment initiation and treatment monitoring (in prison and in the community)
