Neurosciences Unit
The Neurosciences Unit (NSU) is a specialist statewide, community based mental health service, headed by a Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist. We provide specialist consultation, assessments and support to people who have, or may have, cognitive (thinking) impairment or neurological conditions. We work with children, teenagers, adults and older adults.
The NSU is administered through NMHS Mental Health, Public Health, and Dental Services and is located on the Graylands Health Campus.
Please note we operate from Monday to Friday and do not provide emergency medical or mental health services.

Services provided
Referral criteria and forms for our different programs can be found under each of their respective sections. Referrals can be forwarded to the “Team Leader” via the address. If you would like to discuss a potential referral, please phone the NSU on (08) 6159 6464 during our operating hours of 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday to speak to one of our staff members.
| General diagnostic assessment programs | |

Paediatric (aged 6-18 years) Available to young people with neurological, genetic, neurodevelopmental and or mental health disorders with associated cognitive impairment. Staffed by neuropsychologists, speech pathologists, and social work. |
Adult (all ages) Available to individuals with significant cognitive impairment resulting from various medical, neurological, genetic, neurodevelopmental and mental health disorders (e.g. stroke, dementia, alcohol dependence, acquired brain injury, chronic schizophrenia etc.). Huntington’s disease Available to patients with Huntington’s disease (HD) and their families/carers. Services and support are available throughout the course of the disease (premanifest and manifest stages). Staffed by a sessional neurologist, sessional psychiatrists, social workers, speech pathologists. If considered relevant to the clinical management, patients may subsequently also be eligible to access input from clinical neuropsychology. International research opportunities are also available. Young Onset Dementia The Neurosciences Assessment and Care Clinic (NACC) is an assessment and clinical management program for patients with a diagnosed or strongly suspected young-onset neurodegenerative condition (age of onset below age 65). Referrals into this clinic are for Neurology review. If considered relevant to the clinical management, patients may subsequently also be eligible to access input from Psychiatry, Social Work, Speech Pathology, and Clinical Neuropsychology. Huntington’s disease Available to families with a history of HD. The individual will be seen by a social worker but may also see a sessional neurologist or psychiatrist. Predictive Testing Program Referral Form (Word)

Familial dementias Available to people with a family history of neurodegenerative disorders (e.g. some heritable forms of frontotemporal dementia and motor neuron disease; familial Alzheimer’s disease; Spinocerebellar Ataxia etc.). |
